The Filmmakers

Gay Venable is the executive producer and creator of Trailblazing Texas Women. She has received many awards including a tops award given for a TV spot featuring Family Gateway in Dallas and a clio for a SPCA public service announcement. In addition, she has garnered awards for numerous national broadcast campaigns for clients such as Pepsi, Chili’s, and Pennzoil. The agencies she has worked for include Tracy-Locke, DDB Needham, and GSD&M advertising. In 2005 she was a producer on “The Reality of Speed” which aired on Spike TV and she has recently finished a TV pilot.

The fiscal sponsor for this project is Women and their Work, a 501(c)(3) group that supports artists in Texas. The film will be donated to schools and women’s shelters across Texas and the US.

Mark Birnbaum is the Director of Photography and the consulting producer. He produces, directs, shoots and edits documentaries. Birnbaum is the winner of the prestigious Peabody award, one of the highest awards given for documentaries. His film subjects have ranged from issues of peace and justice to healthcare and Salsa Music. Birnbaum started his career at PBS stations in Maryland where he shot and edited miles of films. In the mid-80’s he established Birnbaum Productions. His latest documentaries, Larry v. Lockney and “The Big Buy” have both received national distribution.
